It’s time for me to finally buy a grown-up watch. I’d like to get
something commensurate to my age (35), salary ($ 125,000), and title
(head of architectural department). How much should I spend on a nice
timepiece, and do you have any suggestions?

Not a citizen watch. If you want a nice
watch, then look at Swiss, Seiko or if you are feeling rich, then Tag
Huer. The Tag watches are some of the nicest and about a one thousand
dollars.

Depends on what you are looking for.
Personally, I wouldn’t spend more than $ 10,000. Here are some ideas
that aren’t Swiss watches:
– Seiko – spring drive or Grand Seiko (Grand Seiko is probably better
than a Swiss watch at the same price IMO. Definitely check the Grand
Seiko out). These are both around $ 3000 – $ 7000 depending on the
model.
- German mechanical/automatic watches such as Sinn and Stowa.
I think the best price range in terms of quality and what you get, is $
3000 – $ 7500. Most Swiss watches in this range are very good. Don’t
get a Rolex, they are a bit cliche IMO. I would recommend Omega,
Breitling, Bell and Ross, Doxa, Fortis, Longines, Kobold and Bathys.

If you like their style, you may wish
to buy a Rolex because they offer wonderful, robust mechanical movements
that will last you. But, they don’t appeal to everyone.
There are many prestigious brands that, essentially use the same
mechanical movements as many, lower priced brands. You are simply
paying more for brand name, and of course, materials like gold and
precious stones.
Personally, for me, knowing the state of the industry, eve if I made a
very good salary, I would never spend more that 10K on a watch. I
would look at some nice Omega and Jaeger-LeCoultre models.
